Proverbs 21:13
Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor
Will also cry himself and not be heard.

Precious Lord Jesus, I pray that I never forget the plight and anguish of the poor. You hear their silent cries and it touches the deepest part of Your heart. I pray not only for Your compassion to flood and change my heart toward those in need, but also a passion to reach out and make a difference in their lives.

So much in life comes to steal time and resources away from my ability to fulfill what my heart truly desires. Lord, forgive me for not recognizing the thief when he comes and allowing him to stop Your plans and purposes in my life. Forgive me for allowing things that serve no eternal purpose to interfere with Your Kingdom purposes.

Lord Jesus, I want to hear as You do, but I have areas in my heart that run from the sound of pain. I ask You to go into those places and remove everything that causes me to turn a deaf ear to those in need and bring Your healing touch to each one. I want my heart completely abandoned to Your call.

Wreck me with Your extravagant love and wash Me in Your cleansing blood of mercy and grace. Enlarge my heart not only to hear the cries of the hungry, but also to see the tears of the poor. Remove all apathy that holds my heart in a place of justifiable denial.

I pray that my walk is one of honesty and not hypocrisy. Let me be as loving outside the walls of the church, as I am inside. Let me never walk past the hungry pretending not to see, or to smile and callously pat someone's shoulder ignoring the silent cry for help. I want to reach into their hearts to comfort them, as You have reached into mine. I want to demonstrate Your kindness and generosity to everyone I meet.

As the church, forgive us for negating our Christian responsibility by expecting the government to take care of the needy and then to turn around and criticize the welfare system for not doing enough. If Christians would rise up and do what Your Word instructs, there would be no need for food stamps or welfare. We would truly be Your example of love to this world.

Give us ears to hear and eyes to see
Those who are poor and needy!
